Shawn Carter, the mogul, the hip hop legend, and fashion designer, has now added certified sports agent for the NBA and Major League Baseball to his extensive resume. Just last year he launched Roc Nation Sports management division along with Creative Artists Agency. Although there has been major scrutiny for his tactics in recruiting established athletes, he has some of the best under his wing. By securing a $240 million contract for Robinson Cano with the Seattle Mariners, speculators cannot derive whether it was Cano’s talent or his representation that made the deal possible. Others are concerned about Carter’s signing clientele prior to becoming officially certified; was he engaging in unethical behavior? By snatching clients already signed to other agents unbeknownst to the existing representation, Jay Z could be liable for a lawsuit for interfering with contractual relationships. Nonetheless, Skylar Diggins, a top favorite guard in the WNBA, signed to ROC Nation Sports after a quick phone call on her cell. Others have followed suit: CC Sabathia, Victor Cruz, and Kevin Durant are just a few. We have to wonder if HOVA’s aggressive hustler’s mentality will continue to create success or persistent speculative behavior?
