Today (July 8), President Joe Biden signed an executive order to protect abortion rights. The move comes after the Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of overturning Roe v. Wade. As a result of the court’s decision, the constitutional right to an abortion was eliminated. Today’s decision will assist with emergency contraception and help to provide safe abortion procedures, among other services.
The White House released a statement saying, “President Biden has made clear that the only way to secure a woman’s right to choose is for Congress to restore the protections of Roe as federal law. Until then, he has committed to doing everything in his power to defend reproductive rights and protect access to safe and legal abortion.” Today’s motion will also help with public outreach “to ensure that Americans have access to reliable and accurate information about their rights and access to care.”
According to CNN, Biden is unable to reverse the court’s decision. Because his options are limited, the president has urged Americans to vote in midterm elections this November so new members of Congress who will support federal legislations that protect access to abortion can be selected. Sources say Biden has recruited Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra to assist him with the executive order. Within 30 days, Becerra will submit a report of the results.
Biden and the HHS plan to establish a task force with Attorney General Merrick Garland. It will focus on reproductive health care access. Garland has announced that states cannot ban Mifepristone, an FDA approved medication that ends early pregnancy. It was also revealed that the attorney general and the White House will work with private pro bono attorneys for those seeking legal representation for women who need abortions.
“Today, I signed an Executive Order to protect the reproductive rights of women in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s extreme decision to overturn Roe v. Wade,” Biden tweeted. “It formalizes the actions I announced right after the decision and will add new measures to protect women’s health,” he continued.
