@Pharrell Covers W Magazine’s Art Issue

When Pharrell performed at the secret Silencio party during Art Basel Miami Beach, he introduced the crowd to the French street artist JR and the king of Superflat painting, Takashi Murakami, who showed video works at the party. In hindsight, we should’ve seen his full blown emergence on the art world from a mile away.

Now Pharrell’s ageless face is on the cover of W magazine’s art issue, and it’s just in time for the singer’s debut on the gallery scene. Pharrell is currently co-curating an exhibition called “G I R L,” which features works by JR and Murakami, as well as Rob Pruitt, KAWS, Marina Abramovic, and his previous collaborator, Daniel Arsham.

“I’ve always learned from the masters, whether it’s in music or art or fashion. But in 2013, it was different: Suddenly, it was not about being the camo anymore,” Pharrell tells W in the interview.

In the issue, Pharrell appears in a painting by Alex Katz, a cartoon my Mr., and a photograph by Urs Fischer. Along with the press images from his upcoming gallery show, where Pharrell’s likeness appears in many of the pieces, it’s unclear if Pharrell appreciates art or if he wants to be a work of art himself.
