Charli D’Amelio Becomes First TikTok Creator To Reach 100 Million Followers

Charli D’Amelio has become the first person to reach 100 million followers on TikTok, having found fame on the platform posting dance videos to trending songs.

D’Amelio, 16, has become one of the biggest names on social media after joining the popular app a year and a half ago.

The star became the first person to hit 50 million subscribers back in April, but has gone on to smash that record by doubling it in just a matter of months.

D’Amelio, from Norwalk in Connecticut, shared a video on TikTok to celebrate the milestone, captioning the post: “A HUGE THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS HELPED ME REACH 100 MILLION SUPPORTERS!!! AND ANOTHER HUGE THANK YOU TO @tiktok I LOVE EVERY ONE OF YOU!!!”

In the video she thanked fans for their support, saying it felt like a ‘dream’.

“Thank you guys so, so, so much,” D’Amelio said.

“I can’t believe there’s 100 million supporters following me right now. That is insane, oh my goodness.

“Y’all can’t grasp that this is real, I still feel like it’s a dream, kind of waiting to wake up. Very insane. Oh my goodness, thank you!”

The news comes just days after a controversy over D’Amelio’s behaviour in a recent YouTube video, in which a personal chef prepared a meal for her family.

Many viewers felt D’Amelio was rude towards the chef, with hundreds of thousands of fans unfollowing her in protest, prompting D’Amelio to later apologise for her actions.

Realistically, however, the loss of followers is a drop in the ocean for D’Amelio – as proven by her reaching the 100 million milestone, which is something few celebrities have even done on other social media sites.

For example, over on Instagram, singer Rihanna has 87 million followers and model Gigi Hadid has 60 million.

This huge fanbase has translated well into earnings for D’Amelio, too.

According to Forbes, she has made more than $4 million from 30 June 2019 to 30 June 2020, placing her as the second-highest TikTok earner behind dancer Addison Rae – who, the outlet estimates, has earned $5 million.

Oh, and she’s now branched out into cinema as well, having made her debut in the 2019 animated feature Stardog and Turbocat, as a voice actor alongside Luke Evans, Bill Nighy and Gemma Arterton.

Her first book, titled Charli: The Ultimate Guide To Keeping It Real, will also be released later this year.
